Match Week Survival Guide

Match Week Survival Guide

Match Week is one of the most exciting—and stressful—weeks of medical school. While most students will match successfully, preparation ensures you can respond quickly and confidently to any outcome. Use this guide to stay organized and ready.

Before Match Week (Preparation Phase)

☐ Update your CV
☐ Have a personal statement ready that can be adapted to other specialties
☐ Confirm USMLE/COMLEX scores and transcript are uploaded
☐ Verify letters of recommendation are assigned and accessible
☐ Identify 2–3 alternative specialties you would consider
☐ Research specialties that historically have unfilled positions
☐ Talk with faculty advisors about contingency plans and SOAP strategy
☐ Identify programs where you may realistically apply
☐ Identify a faculty mentor or advisor available during Match Week
☐ Know how to reach your student affairs office
☐ Inform letter writers you may need additional letters quickly
☐ Consider research opportunities if needed
☐ Look into preliminary year programs

Monday of Match Week (Did I Match?)

If you matched:
☐ Celebrate and organize Match Day plans
☐ Thank mentors and letter writers

If you did not match:
☐ Contact your advisor or student affairs office immediately
☐ Review the list of unfilled residency programs
☐ Execute your plan of which specialties or research positions you would take
☐ Update personal statements if needed

SOAP Application Phase (Monday–Tuesday)

☐ Submit SOAP applications as early as possible
☐ Apply strategically to programs aligned with your background
☐ Prepare for rapid phone or virtual interviews
☐ Keep phone and email readily accessible

SOAP Offer Rounds (Wednesday–Thursday)

☐ Monitor ERAS and email closely
☐ Respond quickly to offers
☐ Discuss offers with mentors if unsure

Emotional Survival Tips

✔ Stay connected with friends, mentors, and classmates
✔ Avoid comparing outcomes with others
✔ Remember that not matching initially does not define your career

Match Day (Friday)

☐ Attend your Match Day ceremony
☐ Open your envelope
☐ Be proud of your accomplishment
☐ Share the moment with classmates, family, and mentors
☐ Thank everyone who supported you along the way

Final Advice

Preparation creates confidence. Students who prepare for SOAP, know their options, and have a clear plan are better equipped to navigate Match Week—no matter the outcome.

Hope for the best. Prepare for every possibility.
